SHASN is a political strategy board game where every player takes on the role of a politician in the midst of a political campaign. With each turn, players must draw an Ideology Card and take stands on divisive and urgent political issues. These choices will help them gather resources to influence voters or purchase strategic powers. Players can build diverse Ideologies with every policy decision, to best reflect their beliefs and play style. As they progress in the game, players must choose between sticking to their ideals or molding them as per their needs. In a game of trading, coercion, and strategy, players must do whatever it takes to survive and dominate.
Shasn, originally named Manifesto, was a culmination of ideologies, philosophies, beliefs powered by imaginative narrative and design thinking. On a sunny afternoon in February 2018, sitting in our Versova studio, along with creator of Shasn, Zain Memon and documentary filmmaker Vinay Shukla, we were brainstorming ideas for our DVD release of 'An Insignificant Man'. One of the ideas was to give an empty notebook with one question on each page for people to ponder over and reflect upon. Another idea was to design an interactive map of New Delhi with the help of AR. We would play scenes from the film as people point their phones over different parts of New Delhi on the map. Third idea was to gamify political discourse and make it fun and easy for the youth to participate in. We instantly realised that all three ideas have potential and combining all three gave birth to Shasn. Within a matter of just two months, the early prototypes of Shasn (back then Manifesto) were ready. Over the next 18 months, after hundreds of playtests and design iterations, the world finally got to see Shasn launch on Kickstarter.
Being a design author on Shasn, I not only just visualized an aesthetic design that was playable, but also carved out a powerful world that created an immersive and engaging experience. User centered design was our primary approach. From designing each and every component of the game and the gameplay video to the social media design language, everything had been meticulously thought through from a design perspective.
Towards the end of the Kickstarter campaign, we also held a Shasn tournament all over the country in 2019.
Shasn's massive success was a defining moment for the entire team and the studio and for all independent creators like us who want to create an impact with storytelling and design. Since then, Shasn has become a benchmark in game design and visual design not only in India, but all accross the world.
